Boarding School
1.- Location of the plot. Nkuringo is a small community embedded in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, at the southwestern corner of Uganda, close to the Rwandan border. The district capital is Kisoro, about 50km west of Kabale, the largest town in the southern region. The main economic activities are agriculture and tourism linked to mountain gorillas. The building will be located on recently purchased one-hectare plot. It can be located by its GPS coordinates (1o06’01’’S : 29o38’14’’E), 150m away from the Nkuringo-Kisoro road. Due to the exceptionally steep characteristics of the area, some land conditioning and earthworks were carried out on February 2016, including a two-level arrangement and a temporary access. In order to prevent from any future issue with the perimeter slopes, the building surface has been narrowed by incorporating a four-meter berm around the work site. This allowance has reduced the total building zone to 1,120 m2, which is more than enough to meet the requirements of the new school.
2.- General arrangement.
The general arrangement of the compound will be split into two levels, the upper for the administration and girls’ wings and the lower for the dining and boys’ blocks. 2.1.- Girls’ Block (252 m2). Seven differentiated spaces which make the bigger wing of the building. Each of the four 28m2 bedrooms will accommodate up to eight girls in bunk beds. A separate shower module and one caretaker chamber complete the compound.
3.2.2.- Classroom Block (154 m2). The new school will give support to the upper Primary levels of Bright Future School. This requires a minimum of three classrooms for Primary 5, P6 and P7 and the possibility of incorporating P4 in the future. The layout allows for phased construction so that the block can grow according to the academic schedule for the next years. It is planned that each of the 39m2 classrooms serves to a maximum of thirty pupils.
2.3.- Administration (132 m2). Besides the teacher’s room and the director’s and administration offices, two main spaces will accommodate the library and computer room. 2.4.- Dinning (51 m2). This block consist of a dining room of 35m2 for 25 children/shift and a kitchen with storage. Together with the boys’ block and the toilets, this facility will be located at the bottom level of the plot. The general summary of surfaces follows: |
